A more accurate title might be, “Alaska Cruises For First Timers, by a first timer. While a frequent cruiser in the Caribbean, the author bases all his information on one Alaska cruise, plus I assume some research pre- and post-cruise. Some information is moderately helpful, though skimpy: what to pack, weather, and relative merits of mega ships vs. smaller vessels. He talks about many ports of call, even providing corresponding maps, mostly useless without a magnifying glass. But no map of the Alaska coastline!? Why discuss ports of call when there’s no way to situate them? (I assume that all this information is based on an Inside Passage itinerary.) Finally, there’s a two-page easy-to-read index in the front of the book. A dozen or so random checks found most page numbers did not correspond to the expected information. I’m glad Mr. Bateman had a great time, but future travelers headed up to our fiftieth state had better do their research elsewhere.
